The Ultimate Winter Test: A Toughbook CF-33’s Month in the Deep Freeze

Law Enforcement & First Responders October 13, 2026 2 min read

Imagine sending a high-end tablet out into the world, only for it to vanish into the frozen wilderness of Northern Illinois. That’s exactly what happened in December 2025 when CDS Office Technologies dispatched a Toughbook CF-33 rugged tablet to a local client.

How a Toughbook CF-33 Went Missing in Northern Illinois

When the new year rolled around and the package was nowhere to be found, we braced for the worst and filed a lost-item claim with FedEx. Little did we know, our “lost” tablet wasn’t sitting in a warm warehouse; it was undergoing an accidental, month-long endurance test. Misdelivered to a nearby business, the package sat outside through the full, brutal onslaught of the Midwest winter, enduring weeks of sub-zero temperatures, driving snow, ice, and rain.

What We Found After a Month in Sub-Zero Weather

When the tablet was finally discovered in mid-January 2026, the situation appeared grim. The deputy who retrieved it refused to even put the package in the cabin of his squad car because the cardboard was completely waterlogged and falling apart. Once the customer finally opened the box, they found a literal icebox: frost coating the interior and a CF-33 that was dripping wet from the thaw (see the photo sequence below).

How the Toughbook CF-33 Held Up After the Thaw

Most electronics would have been a lost cause, but Panasonic doesn’t build and we don’t sell “most” computers. After a towel dry, the customer hit the power button, and the unit booted up instantly. Not only did it survive its month-long “winter vacation,” but it has been running flawlessly in a squad car in the weeks that followed.
